The central purpose of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa through its various programmes, and, to this end, aims to be the leading protagonist in Africa for such endeavours.

“…the work of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation will substantively contribute to a better life for the people of South Africa and further abroad on the African continent…” – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

The Mandela Rhodes scholarship programmes develop leadership and vocational capacity across African society, to help the continent achieve success and prosperity and full equal participation in the global world. They constitute ‘History At Work’, extracting from past legacies to help Africa succeed in the 21st century.

The scholarship programme is a combination of financial support for postgraduate studies and a high quality leadership development programme. Selected and successful applicants for the scholarship are granted tuition fees, study materials, accommodation & meal allowances, medical aid, travel allowances and a personal allowance to aide them through their degree and onto their bright futures as the next great African leaders in various fields.

This year’s African Centurion coincides with what would have been Mandela’s 100th birthday, making the location of the event that much more powerful and significant. African Centurion champions the spirit of Ubuntu (the Nguni Bantu term that encapsulates the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity) and all that Madiba stood for and has also therefore selected to donate 10% of sponsorship raised this year to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
